pH refers to the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. The pH scale is between 0 and 14, with 0 being very acidic and 14 very alkaline. A healthy vaginal pH is typically 4.5 which is acidic. An acidic environment is essential in preventing harmful bacteria or yeast from causing infection. Menstrual blood has a pH of 7.4 and is elevated during the first 2 days of the menstrual cycle. When menstrual blood is in contact with the vagina for extended periods of time it raises the pH level which increases the risk of infection.
